The aim of this course is to help beginners get more familiar with their cameras, to increase understanding of camera controls and look at a few concepts involved in taking great photos such as composition and lighting.
Structure of the day:
Introduction to the day, starting in the studio. A quick getting to know each other to establish everyone’s experience (if any!) and an overview of what we’ll be learning.
We’ll be talking about cameras and how they work. An introduction to camera controls (shutter speed, aperture, and ISO) – how they combine to get a correct exposure, and how to control each one for different effects. A quick look at exposure compensation. We’ll look at photos that have been taken using different techniques and talk about how they were achieved. We’ll break for coffee and biscuits half way through the session.
Lunch break. A light lunch will be provided.
Practical session outside. We’ll work as a group to put into practice some of the ideas we’ve been learning, as well as doing some one-to-one practical work with your tutor on hand to answer any questions.
We’ll head back to the studio to download some of the photos we’ve taken and put them on the big screen to talk about them. We’ll talk about elements you can add to improve your photos such as composition and lighting.
Finish up with tea/coffee & discuss what we’ve learnt during the day.
This will be an informal, friendly day with the emphasis being on going at a sensible pace to make sure that no-one gets left behind. You should come away feeling more confident about how to take great pictures, and with a clearer idea of how much more there is to learn!
